Meet Dr. Julia

Dr. Julia D. Mahaney, DO, FAPA, FASAM
Dr. Julia D. Mahaney is a board-certified psychiatrist who brings a distinctive blend of osteopathic principles, functional medicine, and evidence-based practice to her work with adults throughout South Carolina. Her approach reflects a fundamental belief: meaningful psychiatric care requires time—time to listen, time to understand the whole person, and time to build the therapeutic relationship that makes lasting change possible.
Education and Training
Dr. Julia earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. She completed her residency in psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio/Wilford Hall Medical Center (SAUSHEC) and earned the distinction as the 2004-2005 Outstanding Resident, PGY-4. She graduated from the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in October 2015.
Dr. Julia is Board-Certified in both General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine and is Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association (FAPA) and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM).
Military Service and Leadership
As a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve, Dr. Julia demonstrated sustained commitment to serving those who serve. Her military career has taken her across diverse clinical environments—military medical centers, the Department of Veterans Affairs to community mental health centers—where she has treated service members, veterans, and their families with distinction.
Clinical Excellence and Innovation
Dr. Julia's career spans academic medical centers, community hospitals, and outpatient settings, giving her comprehensive insight into the full spectrum of psychiatric care. She has held several leadership positions and has championed several quality improvement initiatives that elevated standards of care and enhanced patient outcomes. Her work has consistently focused on bridging the gap between clinical excellence and systemic improvement.
A Different Model of Care
Dr. Julia's private practice operates outside traditional insurance constraints, allowing her to prioritize what matters most: the patient. This private-pay model eliminates the administrative burden and time restrictions imposed by insurance companies, enabling her to offer extended appointments, comprehensive evaluations, and the continuity of care that complex psychiatric conditions demand. For patients seeking depth over speed, this approach represents a return to medicine as it should be—unhurried, thorough, and genuinely personalized.
Clinical Philosophy
Drawing on her osteopathic training, Dr. Julia views each patient as an integrated whole, examining how physical health, lifestyle, environment, and psychological factors intersect to shape mental well-being. Her functional medicine perspective drives her to identify and address root causes rather than simply managing symptoms. Every treatment plan is grounded in current evidence while remaining flexible enough to honor individual circumstances, preferences, and goals.
Practice Information
Dr. Julia provides psychiatric care to adults throughout South Carolina through both in-person appointments and telepsychiatry. Her practice welcomes individuals seeking a psychiatrist who will invest the time necessary to truly understand their story and partner with them in their journey toward wellness.
